Fall workshop updates

Hello Committee. We had a nicely productive meeting on Tuesday at Perkins. In attendance: Clara Hudson, Tina Hertel, Annette Fisher, Sandy Howard and Maryann SodoswkiHere are the updatesOur speakers are Sue Butler and Barbara Keiser from the Eastern Monroe Public Library and Terri Freeman-Smith and Bob Spinelli from the University of Scranton. Sue and Barbara bring the library perspective of Human Resources and Terri and Bob will address legal issues from a strictly professional and technical side. The workshop will be held in the afternoon 12:30-4 at Lackawanna College the second or third week of January. I have send messages to our speakers asking for best dates. Thanks to Sandy Howard for attending and hosting along with Wayne and Elaine for agreeing to participate in the planning. Parking shouldn’t be a problem in that Lackawanna will have a limited number of classes during winter break. We had a tentative title of “Hire the Smile” but following discussion we are fishing about for an alternative, your suggestions are encouraged. Our topic is employee retention, logistical, legal, and human resource issues in the library. Our speakers would appreciate your questions to help focus their talks. So as managers, employees, colleagues, supervisors; what do you want to know?We have most things on our checklist covered:Tina: flyer (printing and distribution), electronic (listserv and NPLN site posting) PR Sandy: Contact for registration, contact for refreshments at Lackawanna CollegeClara and Sandy: scheduling room and date, participant incentives – we will get what we can from Lackawanna College bookstore but it was suggested that we get pens or folders printed with the NPLN logo. I am going to follow through on that option for general purposes as well as for the workshop. Annette and Maryann: day of registrationMaryann: CE Clara: Agenda and speaker biosAnnette: evaluationsRegistration fee will be $10.00 dollars. As the details come together next week we can get the flyer started and hopefully out by the end of the month. Thanks for all your efforts. I will be in touch soon.

fall workshop

Greetings my dear committeeWOW! Time is just flying by and we have very little done for the fall -- what may well be a winter workshop. I would still like to shoot for a December date. Our last meeting only Tina and I were present and we discussed without any focus topics. Attached is a list of topics that I have compiled over the years from evaluations. This is a half day so we can be very focused with possibly a single speaker. If any of the topics move you or you have a particular speaker in mind shout it out! Sites. We were considering a public library. The fall workshop averages 40-50 people. I had thought the Mill Memorial Library in Nanticoke. They are right by LCCC so easy to find, and they have a very nice room. I will contact the board and director (I have a bit of an inside tract there :) to feel them out. The other site I thought of is Lackawanna College (but I don't think they are an NPLN member) or Johnson College. I will contact the site for more info. I could use another breakfast, how about you? Can we meet? I know PaLA is next week, so how about the first week of October. Let me know what day that first week you all are available. We have plenty of funds that can be used through the end of the year. I am also sending invitations for new committee members, let me know if you have anyone in mind who would like to serve on the committee. Ok lastly the blog. Once we get going I hope you all use it. This message will be there. Feel free to comment. Another thing is AIM. Please let me know if you have an IM screen name. If you don't consider signing up for one. It is a virtual meeting room. I found it very effective in planning the last workshop, imagine how productive we all could be with that kind of communication speed. My AIM screen name is libhudson. Put me on your buddy list please and send me your screen name. Hope to hear from you and see you all soon. Clara

deadlines

We will assemble the packets that morning. I think it is a great idea. Tina you are printing the minutes and Chapter agendas?
I will have the workshop agenda done tonight. I just got back from vacation. I will send you copies when done and have someone here proof. I can get them printed tomorrow here in our print shop. I have checks for the ads. I will bring them with me to the workshop. We will have to meet to work out the final budget between the Chapter and NPLN. Thanks for keeping on top of things while I was away. Are there anymore registrations?
Anyone who is doing registration should be there by 8:30 to stuff folders and there are always early arrivals. Did we decide on name tags. Is someone printing them. If not I have blanks that I can bring and a sharpie.
Is anyone checking the blog. I hope that it will be a primary means of communication for future workshops. I was talking with Steve Cohen over the weekend and he is writing us up on his blog Library Stuff as creative use of a blog. So check library stuff and log on to the NPLN blog and add your two cents.

updates and details

Hi Tina and Marianne,I will be leaving for vacation tomorrow and won't be back till June 3rd. I have the agenda mostly done. I will send it to print Monday, 6th. I will get you electronic copies for editing before I leave. Right now only Bonnie Oldham and I are confirmed for attendance. I am hoping that more people will attend from UofS. Tina, Zhong should not have to pay registration as a speaker. Add the speakers to the registration list as nonpaying speaker attendees. Didn't we decide to give a small gift certificate to the local speakers? Twenty dollars from Barnes and Noble. I believe that Tina volunteered to get these. That is what my notes indicate. Did you get the CRD check for Steven Cohen? I will request the balance of $250 from Cathy and NPLN. I have several checks for ads to deposit into NPLN's accounts. Marianne attached is the tech needs of speakers. Do you have an invoice for the cost of pens, folders and such? That will come out of the NPLN account. Let me know if there is anything else right now. I will be checking my email daily.

Flyers

The flyers are in the mail and have been delivered to the public libraries for distribution within their systems. We went with the black and white color scheme and it really looks quite good.

Flyer

We came to a roadblock with the flyer. Tina's beautiful flyer would be very very expensive to print in full color, but quite reasonable in gray scale. As you can guess after consulting with Tina we decided to be economic with our committee's respective budgets and go gray. The flyer is still very nice and will be distributed this weekend.

Welcome!!

Welcome to my blog. I have been truly inspired to join the blogging community and have decided to begin with our workshop. I hope that our committee will use the blog as a means of communication. I am finding that the almost 200 e-mails that I currently have on file concerning this workshop are getting a bit much to navigate. I think that we may find this to be an efficient means of tracking and managing progress and planning. I hope that this can also be a tool for generating ideas and for evaluation. So join the discussion and post your two cents.
